My defect-ridden MacBook Pro saga continues. This time I woke up for work, and as I was getting started I heard a clicking sound coming from near the ESC key. I grimaced and wished for it to go away. It did not.
It got louder and louder. Eventually it sounded like this and this and this and this and this and this.
In a perverse act of optimism I called the genuinely friendly folks at Apple. I hopefully asked if there was a recall for this, but I learned that there is not. It doesn’t help that I bought the most-repaired model of the intel-based MacBook lineup, according to a survey. There’s even a helpful wiki article to tell me exactly how screwed I am. To date I’ve had two defective batteries and a defective power supply. I also have a defective motherboard which has a grating hiss when it runs on battery power. Fun.
In light of this, I’m proposing a more accurate “I’m a Mac / I’m a PC” commercial:
Mac: [coughs] Hi, I’m a Mac.
John Hodgman: And I’m a PC.
Mac: [collapses, flailing violently in the throes of a Grand Mal seizure while displaying telltale signs of hepatitis, malaria, and diabetes]
